Loop walk with a view on the top of Salève

Loop walk with a view on the top of Salève

This is a great walk on a sunny day, or if you have visitors it offers an impressive view of both Geneva and the Mont Blanc.

Being a relatively flat route, it is easily doable with your child in a carrier. A fun walk whether in the summer or winter, as this is also a popular spot for a bit of sledding fun during the winter months.

Total walking time: 1.5 - 2 hours

There are a number of places you could park, depending on where you want to start the walk but normally I park at the Observatory Restaurant car park and start the loop on the Geneva side of the mountain.

The Observatory Restaurant has nice food, and they also have a changing table here. Please note that the restaurant is closed on Tuesdays and the weekends are pretty busy so reservation is recommended if you plan to eat here.

You could also park at the small car park near the Croisette intersection which is roughly about half way around this route and do the walk in the opposite order.

If you are coming for sledding, there is a good slope that is popular with families not far away from the Observatory Restaurant, where there is a small car park right next to it.

There are a few different trails on the Geneva side of the mountain - some of the paths are narrow single tracks with a steep drop off, so if your child(ren) are walking, I would suggest to walk across the top of the Salève across the fields. It will eventually bring you out by a small cafe which I don’t know the name of, where you can descend along the road and come out to the crossroads where you will pick up the main road to loop back onto the back of the Salève where you will join the path in the picture above to walk with the Mont Blanc to your right.

If you’re feeling adventurous, keep taking the narrow path closest to the Geneva edge of the mountain as you walk with Geneva to your right. There is a part of the path which is carved out of stone which is pretty cool!

The walk back to the Observatory Restaurant (if you started here) along the back of Salève offers a spectacular view of the Mont Blanc on a clear day, and a crowd pleaser for visitors and residents alike!
